Before we knew Nissan as Nissan in the United States, we knew it as Datsun. The reason Nissan used the Datsun name in the U.S. is simple; the name just sounds more American than Nissan, which was heavily involved in Japan’s military industries. The Datsun brand in the U.S. most famously brought us roadsters like the 240Z which was originally renamed for the U.S. market as Nissan Z cars in their respective generations. The original Datsun 240Z was significant for its stylish design, fun performance, and affordable pricing making it a serious competitor to more established American performance cars at the time. Datsun also made a name for itself with the 510 which has been described as a “poor man’s BMW” and small pickup trucks. Datsun badging gradually changed to “Datsun by Nissan” on some models like the first Maxima until eventually, they had all switched over to the Nissan brand.
